DkIT RiVeR Project hosts One Million Stars Project

As part of the global United Nations 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign the RiVeR Project,  in collaboration with RESPECT | DkIT was delighted to host Siobhan McQuillan from Ambers Women’s Refuge’s One Million Stars Project.

Amber Women’s Refuge leads the Irish chapter of the ‘One Million Stars Project’, a powerful community-arts initiative that raises awareness of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence through the weaving of eight-pointed stars. Each star symbolises hope, solidarity, safety, and the belief in healthy, respectful relationships. By engaging schools, community groups, and volunteers nationwide, the project provides an inclusive and creative space for learning, connection, and shared purpose.

The One Million Stars initiative brought DkIT students, staff, and community partners together on campus to weave stars — each a statement of unity, compassion, and commitment to ending violence. The stars created at DkIT will become part of the travelling LOVE Installation, set to visit DkIT’s campus in January 2026 as part of the RiVeR Project’s recognition of ten years of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence education at DkIT.

Emma Murphy

Emma is a Domestic Violence campaigner & global public speaker and has been since 2015 after she shared her story online which to date has been viewed over 50 million times worldwide.  Emma has travelled to many countries such as Australia and spoken at many worldwide events such as the third world women’s conference in the Hague, TedX in Cyprus, Safe Ireland world summit and many more. Emma continues to share her strong message and to raise awareness around Domestic Violence, Emma is a support worker at Saoirse women’s refuge. 

 

Emma completed the level 8 ‘Fundamentals of understanding & responding to Domestic Abuse’ programme in 2017 at DkIT and since then has continued to share her knowledge with the world, empowering women make a stand and take control.  Above all of Emma’s hard work and contribution she is a mother of 2 and is passionate about raising awareness for the younger generation, sharing knowledge and tools so the younger generation are aware of the signs and what to look out for when in relationships. Emma believes the younger generation hold the key to change in Ireland.
